Leading Thoughts: 6/28/17 Breaking Into the Field of Engineering - Deanna Chambers' Story

by Charles M. Allgood, P.E. @ Blog and News

Deanna Chambers, P.E. shares her experience about entering the field of engineering. Deanna has been a Geotechnical Design Engineer for Ground Improvement Engineering since 2007.

Getting Started in Engineering

According to the Congressional Joint Economic Committee , only 14% of engineers in the U.S. are women. Being a woman in a male-dominated industry comes with challenges and opportunities. With the right support systems, mentors and drive, anybody can succeed and Deanna continues to show that success at Ground Improvement Engineering.

During high school, she enjoyed math and science classes and knew that she wanted to make it a career. Not knowing any engineers at the time, she looked at options and chose engineering based on the freshman class schedule. Iowa State niversity, where she received her Bachelor’s degree, has a great Engineering and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) program. At ISU, she was able to build a support system of other women who lived on the residence hall floor that were all in STEM fields. “Being surrounded by other strong women with similar goals is very empowering,” Deanna recalls. During undergrad, she learned that engineering is less about math and science and more about problem-solving and hard work.

The ISU Career Fair brought her first summer internship after her freshman year working for a local geotechnical testing company. Hired to help in the lab and eventually finding her way into being a field technician hurled her into the Geotechnical world. During the following school year, she held a research assistant position with the geotechnical engineering department helping a graduate student gather data for his research project. The following summer, she took a chance and moved into the construction world with Peterson Contractors, who is one of the Geopier® installers for Ground Improvement Engineering. During this internship, she provided estimates for designers who sent their scope of work and saw the work through construction as project manager. As you can imagine, this experience proved to be extremely useful once she moved to the design side after graduation. It was an exciting time to be in the ground improvement industry. Geopier was ramping up to be the industry leader in the Intermediate Foundation® industry and new technology was being developed to take on all soil types.

Life as a Geotechnical Design Engineer at Ground Improvement Engineering

As an engineer, it’s important to be innovative and searching for improvements – and we are definitely doing that at Ground Improvement Engineering.  We work closely with geotechnical consultants, structural engineers, general contractors, and owners paying special attention to communication to ensure a smooth process.  When the geotechnical study is complete, the project team comes to us to provide a feasibility assessment and estimate. With a notice to proceed, we provide design documents and stamped shop drawings. Then, while the project is under construction, we make sure the design is being carried out correctly. “This career is very rewarding as every project for which we have to provide solutions is unique and we get to see the project come to life from the early design stages to the finished product,” Deanna says.

What Deanna has Learned About Engineering

“The best engineers build on previous experiences and learn what to anticipate, solving problems before they happen. There will be mistakes and good engineers won’t make that mistake again.  Being humble and admitting when you don’t know something is important and knowing when to seek a second opinion is important,” says Deanna.

Deanna is thankful for the women who paved the way in engineering and made it a mainstream career option. She is also thankful for her colleagues in helping her excel in the industry. Being a trusted advisor is what she strives for and feels that she has exceled as an engineer. As she celebrates her 10th anniversary of working with Ground Improvement Engineering, she looks forward to the future and what there is to accomplish.

Leading Thoughts: 9/18/17 Why the Geotechnical Engineer Role is critical in Ground Improvement

by Charles M. Allgood, P.E. @ Blog and News

We sat down with Dick Gernant, P.E. to discuss the benefits of working with a geotechnical engineering firm like Ground Improvement Engineering (GIE). Dick has been a Principal Engineer with GIE since 2003.

Soils are complex. You need someone with practical experience who knows how the soil on your construction site is going to respond under various loading conditions. A geotechnical engineer is the best person to understand the complexities of the soil profiles and how the structural loads are going to affect the soils.

When should the geotechnical engineer be introduced?

Identifying the qualities of the right geotechnical engineering firm starts at your initial point of contact. Many firms provide a sales person as the initial point of contact. This person may not have an engineering background and may hand you off to another point of contact after you’ve hired the firm. Look for a firm like Ground Improvement Engineering, which provides you with one point of contact – always a geotechnical engineer – who will see the project through to completion.

What are the qualities of an experienced geotechnical engineer?

Look for someone with wide range of practical experience working with a variety of soil profiles and projects. Each project has different concerns and constraints. You also want the engineer to look out for best interest of the project including its future uses or implications from an overall, environmental standpoint. You can tell you’re working with an experienced geotechnical engineer when they can anticipate and troubleshoot any complex issues before the crew gets out to the field, including what problems are associated with the soil that they might encounter.

What are the red flags that someone might be working with an engineer who isn’t trained or qualified to do the work?

The biggest red flag is receiving a geotechnical study that is underdeveloped or under scoped. For example, perhaps the program is too short or too widely spaced for the loading. They might also suggest technology or construction processes that aren’t appropriate for the soil type of the project. They need to provide appropriate technology or methods for the soil to respond and behave appropriately.

How can you spot these red flags? Ask them questions about how they would address compaction or excavation on a site, based on the soil profiles. You may also spot these red flags during a project, such as if a soil profile indicates high groundwater and they allow for excavation without appropriate dewatering.

Describe the technology that is available to geotechnical engineers.

There are a number of databases that describe soil conditions with soil survey maps, bedrock maps and soil geology applications. Many of these databases are available through public entities like the county conservation offices. Geotechnical engineers often use this information to plan their investigations to analyze how the soil will respond to planned structure development.

There are various technologies for the exploration of soil strength methods that are more appropriate than others. Your geotechnical engineer should have an understanding of the available exploration methods and what is appropriate for your project. From there, computer modeling allows us to look at the site as a 3D model and determine how the soil is going to respond to the expected load conditions. This improves the construction process, as the appropriate ground improvement solution is applied and makes for a smoother project.

What questions should a client ask before choosing an engineer?

Ask questions how their experience relates to your project. Consider the size of the project footprint and load. Is it a small, single-story building or a large, multi-story construction project? Is it an agriculture structure, such as a large diameter grain bin or fluid tank? Every project requires a familiarity of the implication to the loading onto the soils. If you’re in the transportation industry, you’ll want an engineer with roadway construction or civil construction experience, not a building engineer.

Also ask about their experience working with soil conditions similar to that of your sites. You’re looking for years of practical experience.

Why might someone be hesitant to hire a geotechnical engineer?

Unfortunately, not everyone sees the value of hiring a geotechnical engineer. But keep in mind, the up-front cost of an appropriate soil assessment could save you six figure construction costs or time on schedule.

What are the benefits of hiring a geotechnical engineer?

A geotechnical engineer can anticipate areas of concern, such as loading and stability, as well as help to avert hidden construction issues. Above all else, when you hire a firm like GIE, you will have a geotechnical engineer provide the up-front budget and design analyses, proposals, the ground improvement design and follow the project through completion.

Leading Thoughts: 8/29/17 How Structural Engineering Supports Ground Improvement

by Charles M. Allgood, P.E. @ Blog and News

Mike Jones, P.E. has been a Structural Engineer for Ground Improvement Engineering since 2016.

Most people think of geotechnical engineers when they think of Ground Improvement Engineering (GIE), but did you know we have a structural engineer on staff? Mike Jones, P.E. is a licensed structural engineer who provides services for GIE and other geotechnical engineers across North America.

By having an in-house structural engineer, we save time and money on Geopier® and non-Geopier projects that require temporary support solutions. Here are the most common scenarios in which we might bring in Mike and his expertise:

Finite Element Analysis Geopier-supported floor slabs are often used for projects at GIE and it’s important to have in-house engineering support to evaluate the soil-slab interaction. This is an area in which we frequently assist other geotechnical engineers. Mike analyzes the floor slabs for cracking stresses and helps determine optimum Geopier spacing to provide an efficient floor thickness design.

Preliminary Analysis for Estimates Let’s say GIE is bidding on a project and little is known about the building on the site. Mike can provide a preliminary analysis to determine the approximate building weight. This improves the accuracy of our estimate and proposed ground improvement solution.

Pile Designs Micropiles are high-capacity, small diameter piles that can be used in conjunction with both Geopier and non-Geopier projects. For example, if you have a building addition and need to limit vibrations, or have low overhead clearance, Mike can design a micropile to support the structure. He also designs helical piles and Ductile Iron Piles (DIPs). The DIP technology is growing popular in the Midwest as it’s a preferred low-vibration system for higher capacities.

Temporary Structural Support / Earth Retention If you are excavating a basement, something has to support that soil and keep it from caving in. Mike can create temporary shoring designs with sheet piling or beam lagging. He also designs falsework for dams and bridges, securing the structures until a permanent solution is in place.

Wind Turbines Wind farms continue to grow across the Midwest and we’re assisting with a large number of these projects. Mike supports GIE on wind energy projects by identifying where piers need to be placed based on pressure distribution.

Mike resides in Des Moines, Iowa.  He assists with projects throughout America and Canada. He completed a number of projects in the first half of the year including the Iowa State football stadium green space expansion, where he provided earth retention analysis and designed micropiles and DIPs. He also assisted with a Reinforced Concrete Pipe (RCP) project that shut down half of I-29 this spring.

As you can likely tell, it is a great benefit to GIE and our clients to have a structural engineer on staff. He is able to answer questions and provide support solutions without delaying the project. Of course, Mike benefits from having access to our geotechnical engineers, too. Every project he completes requires knowledge of the soil conditions. If he’s dealing with complex soil profiles, he knows who to go to for assistance with applying the right solution.

Project Spotlight: 11/16/16 HarborChase of Shorewood completed in Wisconsin on Geopier

by Stephen S. Weyda, P.E. @ Blog and News

Congratulations to Altius Construction for completing the new 4-story HarborChase senior living building in the Village of Shorewood, Wisconsin.  Altius partnered with Eppstein Uhan Architects and Pierce Engineers to design and construct this well-appointed facility.

Due to poor soils they elected to support the building using the Geopier GP3® system.  Ground Improvement Engineering designed the Geopier system and Foundation Service Corporation installed over 450 Geopier elements in two phases.

The following is a video link that describes the design collaboration and construction.  The poor soil and Geopier portion start near 2:18 into the video.

The Cost Effective Contractor

How Nostradamus predicted @mattcutts. No, really

Ok, ok… this post is not really about Nostradamus, and – eventually – neither about Matt Cutts, but – do you see? – you saw that title shared somewhere and you clicked. The title did its job. Nostradamus, Matt Cutts… what a weird combination, isn’t it? But probably there are many SEOs out there thinking

Incepting ideas or the essence of marketing

What is an idea? “A thought”, this is what the writer’s best friend – the dictionary – laconically says. But, as that friend immediately suggests us, an idea is thought or suggestion as to a possible course of action. But, heritage of my of my studies of philology done in the past, I like more
