Are Website Builders Actually Free?

by Owner @ Google Maps Marketing – Expert Local SEO Company

The majority of website builder brands offer a free account which allows users access to the basic features and building tools. A handful of website builders provide a limited trial period to allow users to get comfortable with the service before paying for the subscription – these are generally the more complex and sophisticated website builders.

The free accounts generally provide users with a subdomain, for example yourname.wix.com, yourname.websitebuilder.com or yourname.squarespace.com users can then publish their site under this URL. If you publish your site on a free account you will notice that it has many advertising banners for the website builder brand that you chose, this doesn’t make your site look particularly appealing to your customers and visitors. Our advice is if you have never used a website builder before or it’s your first time designing a website use the free account to get used to the editor and the features it offers and then when you want … Continue reading

Music Moves me - Songs about Autumn

Music Moves me - Songs about Autumn

by noreply@blogger.com (bookworm) @ Ramblin' with AM

Autumn is such a beautiful time of the year in upstate New York.

I remember, in early elementary school, being given assignments to pick up autumn leaves that had fallen on the sidewalks of my native New York City and bring them to school.

Later, as a Mom, I took my son for walks.  We would collect colorful leaves and press them between sheets of wax paper.

That's why, when I decided to take part in the Music Moves Me challenge for today, asking for songs of autumn, I immediately thought of the song Autumn Leaves.

Researching this song, covered by so many artists (the first song on my playlist is a version sung by Nat King Cole), I discovered that this song, which I thought was written by Johnny Mercer, was actually (originally) a French song called "Les feuilles mortes".  Well, I guess autumn leaves are dead, but why think of them that way?

This is the first song on my autumn playlist.

Here are the other songs on my playlist:

2.  More Than This, by Roxy Music. From 1982, perhaps this isn't totally a song about autumn, but it does mention falling leaves.  So why not? (Plus, I love love love this song, especially how Bryan Ferry stops singing and the music keeps on going.)

3.  Autumn in New York, here sung by Billie Holiday.  The song itself was written in 1934, and was covered by many artists.  I had thought about linking to the cover by Frank Sinatra, but decided to feature Billie Holiday's cover instead.

4.  Harvest Moon, by Neil Young

5.  And finally, from 1966, Leaves That Are Green, by Simon and Garfunkel.

What music moves you today?

P.S. I hurt my back and may not be online much today.  But I will come visit you soon!

How Google Search Works in 2006

by Owner @ Google Maps Marketing – Expert Local SEO Company

Infographic shows how search works, from the perspective of a content creator, starting with their content & following it through the indexing & ranking process.

As users have shifted to mobile devices, the limited screen size of the devices have pushed search engines to squeeze out & displace publishers with their own self-hosted information in an effort to offset the poor usability offered by tiny devices, while ensuring the search habit does not decline.

The philosophy of modern search has thus moved away from starting with information and connecting it to an audience, to starting with the user and customizing the result page to them.

“The biggest three challenges for us still will be mobile, mobile, mobile”.

Google Begins Rolling Out Its Latest Algorithm Update – Google Panda 4.2

by Owner @ Google Maps Marketing – Expert Local SEO Company

Google’s Gary Illyes has confirmed that Google started rolling out Panda update version 4.2 last weekend, affecting 2–3% of queries.

Google algorithm updates always rouse a storm on the internet community as they directly affect website rankings. The latest such refresh is Google Panda 4.2, which began on 18th July, 2015. However, the rollout is extremely slow and that’s the reason people didn’t notice it. According to Google, it may take months till the time we are able to notice any significant impact on the website rankings. It might also not affect all the pages of a website in the short run. Google officials were tight-lipped about why the rollout is so slow.

This refresh is happening just after 10 months from the last update that was rolled out in September last year. As Google algorithm updates keep on happening periodically, it’s considered to be the 30th such update.

It was difficult even for the webmasters to notice … Continue reading

Words Have Power

by noreply@blogger.com (bookworm) @ Ramblin' with AM

It is said that the Chinese symbol for "crisis" combines their symbols for "danger" and "opportunity".  It's not true, but it sounds good.

It seems we live in a state of constant crisis, which is why I try to keep world events out of my blog.  But it's hard.  Disaster in Puerto Rico, in Texas, in Mexico, in Florida, in the Virgin Islands, in other parts of the world.  Political crisis, with our world edging closer to possible destruction.

In the United States, everything has become political.  We are all, it seems, in crisis mode, with "breaking news" appearing on our television screens multiple times a day.  We are even questioning some of our core values, which isn't necessarily a bad thing.  And then there is reading.

Reading is safe, right?  Not so fast.

One article I read recently, about our local public libraries, point out that libraries are political, some more than others.  This is true, and we should also keep in mind that libraries are in the forefront of fights against censorship.

NaNoWriMo, National Novel Writing Month (which I have participated in several times), sent its participants an email several months ago.  It reads, in part:

As a creative writing nonprofit, we’re not a political organization. We don’t endorse candidates or support any particular party. In an ideal world, we would focus only on empowering people to write.
Yet we find ourselves in a time where people’s ability to tell their stories—and even to safely exist—is at stake.
NaNoWriMo strives to be a gateway and sanctuary for people’s voices. Our guiding belief is that every person’s story matters, and we celebrate the inclusion of all religions, races, genders, sexualities, and countries of origin. We help people find a safe space to be who they are—creators, storytellers, and world changers.....
So now, an organization devoted to encouraging people to write, and express themselves, finds themselves having to take a political position.

So now, we come to Banned Books Week 2017.

It's not new, but it's more important than ever.  To quote from their website:

"BBWC Chair Charles Brownstein says, “Our free society depends on the right to access, evaluate, and voice a wide range of ideas. Book bans chill that right, and increase division in the communities where they occur. This Banned Books Week, we’re asking people of all political persuasions to come together and celebrate Our Right to Read.”

You might be surprised to know what books you have read that have been targets of censorship or outright attempts to ban them.  It isn't just this year, or last.  This is the "top 10" list of 2001 (again, quoting from the website:
  1. Harry Potter, by J.K. Rowling
Reasons: anti-family, occult/Satanism, religious viewpoint, violence
  2. Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck
Reasons: offensive language, racism, unsuited to age group, violence
  3. The Chocolate War, by Robert Cormier
Reasons: offensive language, sexually explicit, unsuited to age group, violence
  4. I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, by Maya Angelou
    Reasons: offensive language, sexually explicit
  5. Summer of My German Soldier, by Bette Greene
Reasons: offensive language, racism, sexually explicit
  6. The Catcher in the Rye, by J.D. Salinger
Reasons: offensive language, unsuited to age group
  7. Alice (series), by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor
Reasons: sexually explicit, unsuited to age group
  8. Go Ask Alice, by Anonymous
Reasons: drugs, offensive language, sexually explicit
  9. Fallen Angels, by Walter Dean Myers
    Reason: offensive language
  10. Blood and Chocolate, by Annette Curtis Klause
Reasons: sexually explicit, unsuited to age group

I've read several of these.  Many are considered classics.  How about some others? The Hunger Games?  The Kite Runner?  To Kill a Mockingbird?  Yes, all of them.

If I were an author, I would love nothing better than to be in the company on this list.

How to participate in Banned Books Week?  It takes a visit to a local library, or, better yet, reading a book on the list. It takes resistance -resistance to the banning of books. #WordsHavePower - exactly why people try to ban books.  Because, dear reader, words have power.  Even the words of this blog.

Will you support Banned Books Week and visit your local library?  Or, better yet, start to read a banned book this week?

How to Leverage Social Media for SEO: Link Building

by Owner @ Google Maps Marketing – Expert Local SEO Company

Exploring the myriad of ways social networks can be utilized in your link-building efforts.

I recently asked a room of experienced marketers how they thought social media marketing could assist their SEO efforts. The answers were more or less what I had expected to hear:

Social media helps foster relationships, which in turn helps build links and improves rankings. Social media aids in public relations, as a distribution channel and a means of generating easy online buzz. Social sharing provides a form of social proof, giving greater credibility and trustworthiness to your content. Brands can rank for their social networking profiles and receive greater visibility within the SERP.

While these are all true, let’s focus on how link building on social platforms can help unite a brand’s social media marketing and SEO efforts.

At the most basic level, social networking sites provide an easy way to share and distribute your message. If the content is seen by the … Continue reading

    The Pink Tsunami of October

by noreply@blogger.com (bookworm) @ Ramblin' with AM

In a week, we will have the annual breast cancer walk in Binghamton, New York.

I can imagine what it will be like, based on past events.

It will have a large turnout.  Crowds of women and men dressed in pink, or in white shirts with the breast cancer symbol, or sporting pink boas, will start out from Rec Park, and march through the streets of the West Side of Binghamton.  Perhaps it will be a beautiful fall day like yesterday was (crisp and clear, beautiful blue skies).  But I won't be part of the crowd.  I will be on the sideline, fighting the conflicting emotions that always rise in my - excuse me, chest-  when I think of breast cancer.

    Why?

Don't get me wrong.  I was quite alive and well in the "bad days" of breast cancer. I know some of what my mother in law went through battling her two distinct breast cancers during the 1970's (more on that a little later).  So many people alive today do not know the horrors of breast cancer back then - how women were given no support, how women would be put under while a "frozen section" was run on their tumor.. Women would not know, when they woke up, if they would awaken with their entire body intact or not. If they woke up minus a breast (no chance to think about it) well - cancer in those days was something you fought privately, with little or no support.

My mother in law, to be blunt about it, was butchered by a well meaning surgeon and has the scar to prove how men treated the removal of a breast in the bad old days.

    So what is my issue?

    Several issues.

    1.  I think the "pink" campaign trivializes breast cancer.  How many of you are aware, for example, that there is no such monolith as "breast cancer" but instead a whole spectrum of cancers affecting the breast?  My mother in law had two different types.  One was a tumor.  The other manifested itself as a discharge.  Her doctor "poo pooed" it but finally an instinct told my mother in law that she had a problem and had to seek help elsewhere.  Well, even after the cancer diagnosis, it was diagnosed incorrectly and fortunately Memorial Sloane Kettering made the correct diagnosis (so correct treatment could be given).  There is nothing cute or pink about this killer.

    2.  Not everyone survives.  And I truly think there is a tendency today to "blame the victim":  those with Stage IV, well, they didn't eat the right foods, or they didn't exercise enough, or they didn't do their self exam well enough, or they didn't get enough mammograms or...they didn't fight hard enough.  ???????  Some of this comes down to the old American attitude: we don't want to face death.  That isolates the woman fighting cancer even more.  I saw this happen to an aunt I loved very much and I was a little too inexperienced (in my 20s) back then to understand.  Know what?   I know I still don't understand as I've never faced cancer and a part of me hopes I never have to understand.

There is no cure for breast cancer.  You are in remission, or you are not.

    3.  Men can get breast cancer too!  I worry about my dear husband - with his family history-mother had it twice, and four of her sisters had breast cancer also-is he at risk? .  So, women...did you know that men have breast tissue?  I read a statistic online saying that one out of every 100 breast cancers is diagnosed in a man.  And every one of those men is drowning in the pink tsumani of misunderstanding.

Don't believe me?  There is a high risk breast cancer clinic in Binghamton, and I've talked to my husband about calling them just to talk.  So far, he won't, despite his family history.  He is scared off (or so he says) by the sea of pink.
I recommend you read the story of a local man, Bob Riter.

    4.  I truly feel the pink tsunami of breast cancer funnels money from other cancers.  Maybe breast cancer gets the publicity because there is a test for it or because of the past history I touched on above.  Let's face it, there are no reliable tests for many cancers.  Let's see, how about another dread women's cancer (and this is one only women get):  ovarian cancer?  Women die every day from ovarian cancer.  My former neighbor did.    My late neighbor, who was a middle school music teacher beloved in the community, left a 12 year daughter and a 6 year old son.  Where are all the ovarian cancer soups and cosmetics?

Or let's think about pancreatic cancer.  This is the cancer "sword" dangling over my head:  I've lost an aunt, an uncle and a great uncle to this killer that rarely gives a sign until it is too late. Or stomach cancer?  I lost an aunt to that.

A co worker's brother died of colon cancer.  He was in his 20's. He isn't alone.  Rates of colon cancer are increasing among young people, according to the New York Times.

My childhood best friend survived ovarian cancer, only to die, almost 35 years later, from non-small cell lung cancer.  Exposure to 9/11 smoke may have contributed to her cancer.

I've rambled on enough, but I want to make one more plea.

Stop the pink.  We need to fight cancer.
Cancer.  Not one type of cancer.  All cancer.

    Now.

Why your current SEO approach isn’t enough.

by Owner @ Google Maps Marketing – Expert Local SEO Company

Customers are more empowered than ever before.

Technology and connectivity have completely changed our lives, especially in terms of how and where we spend our money.

This has also led to a power-shift, where people have almost total control of what they see and experience online. This is in turn “causing havoc” for businesses and forcing them to evolve quickly.

It also doesn’t help that the online experience is full of noise; many sites are just a wall of ads, messages and assorted brand clutter. Users now have multimedia and multi-device habits and therefore have multiple means of escape.

All of this has led to search evolving into ‘discovery marketing’. In fact marketers are now shifting money away from paid search into content marketing and other means of being discovered organically.
