Tips to Build Online Reviews for Local SEO

by Jared Banz @ Dayton Web Design

When you go to the grocery store, do you shop blindfolded? No! That would be silly, and it could end badly. Just think of all the havoc that could happen–shopping cart accidents, spilled end cap displays, upset shoppers. It would be a nightmare. I doubt any of us shops blindly for groceries, and the same applies for other services. When making a purchasing decision, we do our homework by asking friends, reading online reviews, and by visiting different websites. Our shopping process is usually a fragmented approach as we collect data from many different data sources, one of them being online review sites. We’ve already covered why online reviews are important, so in this post, we’ll discuss a few ideas to actually collect additional reviews. List Review Profiles on Your Website This suggestion is very basic, but very effective. If you have a testimonials page or have room in your footer, it’s a good idea to add a link or badge to popular review sites. Yelp and other directories usually provide the code for these badges, so simply give that to your developer. The nice thing about this is that you can easily just point happy customers to your website for the review links. Create a Printed Review Handout for Your Store If you are a brick and mortar store, why not create printed materials that point happy customers to your primary review sites? If you’re worried about negative reviews, simply have your receptionist ask customers as they’re leaving how their […]

How did we come up with the name “SumoLeap”?

by Jared Banz @ Dayton Web Design

“How in the world did you come up with ‘SumoLeap,’ and what does it mean?!” This is a question I get quite often when talking to people about my digital marketing company. To be fair, it is not an unreasonable question. What does a Sumo wrestler have to do with web design and marketing? Why a Sumo wrestler? Given the amount of questions that I get surrounding this question, I thought it would be helpful to take a quick break from our normal blog topics and do a quick write-up on the origin of “SumoLeap.” The Challenge Every new business owner faces the huge challenge of coming up with a business name. You can follow a more conventional path and stick with a personally branded name (i.e. Banz Marketing Services, LLC), or you can try to come up with something creative. I decided to go with the latter route; however, it was not easy to pick a name. After sifting through the top 500 marketing companies’ names, I realized that I’d have to make something up. Everything I could come up with, seemed to be taken already. I decided to follow the route of several other tech companies and used the word “Sumo” in my name. BuzzSumo and AppSumo are both companies that I really liked, so I decided to piggy-back off of them. My next step was to come up with a second word that I could combine with “Sumo.” After several brainstorming sessions, I finally arrived at […]

5 Steps to Dominate Local Keyword Research + a Bonus

by Jared Banz @ Dayton Web Design

Thanks for stopping by. This post is a bit lengthy, so I’d recommend pouring a cup of coffee before digging it. The first step for any SEO campaign is keyword research. While that may sound a bit intimidating to non-marketing geeks, there are a lot of tools and tricks of the trade to help make that process easier. The reason why it’s good to start with keyword research, is because you need to know what to focus on for your on-page optimization, your content marketing strategy and even your link building efforts. The goal of keyword research is to help identify keyword phrases that people search in Google that drive high amounts of traffic, are relevant to your business and have a buyer intent. If you don’t hit on those three things, you will be wasting your time. Think of keyword research as a compass or GPS. It will help navigate optimization efforts, so you aren’t making blind decisions. In this blog post, I’ll walk through some basic steps to help you perform keyword research for your business. Using some helpful tools will help make the process much easier and save you a lot of time. (If you are new to local SEO, you may want to read this post first to get a basic understanding.) BONUS: I have also included a bonus video tutorial on my favorite tool for keyword research. If you’d like to access the tutorial, which is nearly 20 minutes long, click the button below. Access […]

Interview: Local SEO for Franchises

Local SEO can be a challenge for any business, but this becomes exponentially more difficult when adding multi-location businesses and franchises. In my latest interview with Mike Blumenthal and Dan Leibson, we discussed some of the challenges and opportunities for franchises competing in local search. We also talked through some link building ideas and the future of local search. I would like to thank Mike and Dan for both participating and for sharing the expertise. If you watch the video, you’ll realize that these two guys are pretty smart and aren’t just blowing smoke. Meet the interview participants. Mike Blumenthal is the founding partner at Get Five Stars and also co-founded LocalU, an educational resource for internet marketers. Mike has been helping clients with SEO since 2002.   Dan Leibson is Vice President of Local & Product at Local SEO Guide, a boutique SEO firm that also does web design. Dan frequently contributes to popular industry blogs including Search Engine Land. You can access their latest research on link building here.   Jared Banz was the moderator of this interview. Jared founded SumoLeap in 2014 to help businesses with digital marketing and web design.   Key Points for Franchises and Multi-Location Businesses: Every franchise scenario is unique and should be assessed on a case by case basis. That said, as a general rule of thumb, it’s best to have a strong corporate website with landing pages for each franchise location that have good, unique content, SCHEMA markup and reviews. 3 Content Marketing Tools to Help Escape Writer’s Block

by Jared Banz @ Dayton Web Design

Content marketing has exploded over the past couple of years. A simple analysis through Google Trends shows the search interest over time. Just for fun, we decided to compare “content marketing” with “cold calling,” and it’s not surprise to see the shift in trends. The truth is that businesses and marketing companies are producing content in record numbers. This can be in the form of blogs, whitepapers, videos, SlideShares, gifs, etc. You may ask, why are companies producing so much content? Content marketing is a great way to attract long-tail search phrases for your SEO. Long tail keywords are those three and four keyword phrases which are very, very specific to whatever you are selling. You see, whenever a customer uses a highly specific search phrase, they tend to be looking for exactly what they are actually going to buy. In virtually every case, such very specific searches are far more likely to convert to sales than general generic searches that tend to be geared more toward the type of research that consumers typically do prior to making a buying decision. Definition from Wordtracker. If done well, content marketing is a great way to engage with potential customers by providing helpful content that can be distributed across social channels. Unlike cold calling, which is an obtrusive sales tactic, content marketing is a much less abrasive tactic and should provide value to potential clients. The Challenge with Content Marketing There are many challenges with content marketing, but one common challenge is writer’s […]

Link Building Tips for Local SEO

by Jared Banz @ Dayton Web Design

Building a fire can be difficult, especially if the wood is damp. It takes time and patience to assemble the kindling and arrange the wood just right, so that enough airflow is present to fuel the flames. It is tricky though because if there is too much airflow, it will quickly extinguish the flame. For those who are less patient, or don’t want to battle the delicate process of starting a flame, gasoline can be used. Gasoline is great at “moving the needle,” but it should be handled with caution. In the same way, link building can help accelerate your website’s search performance. Link building is essential for any quality local SEO campaign, but it should be handled with caution. Any careless or low quality links could end up destroying your website’s traffic. That said, link building is highly important, and many studies show it to be perhaps the most important ranking factor. So what is local link building? Before we dive into local link building tactics, it’s good to take a step back and discuss very briefly the topic of link building. Simply put, quality link building is the process of getting quality, relevant websites to link back to your website. Think of links as a reference on your resume or a vote of confidence for your website. Links communicate a lot to search engines, so it’s important that you have them, and that they are helpful. What defines quality? There are so factors that make up a quality link, […]

Understanding Citation Building for Local SEO

by Jared Banz @ Dayton Web Design

In college or grad school, most likely you had to write many research papers. Your professor probably had strict guidelines on what citations or references you could use. They likely had to be quality references from the original researcher. While it wasn’t always fun finding them, it was important because it (hopefully) strengthened your research paper’s argument. Building citations for local SEO is fairly similar to the above example. The basic premise of local citation building is that you will create authoritative and relevant business citations across the web that point back to your website. This helps Google and other search engines know what your business is, what area(s) it serves and other key information. While the research paper is not a perfect analogy, it hopefully helps communicate the basic need for business citations. The good news is that if you managed to successfully write research papers in college, you can definitely manage your local citations. Download Our Citation Tracker What exactly are citations? Simply put, citations are mentions of your business on the web. Usually, they occur on popular directories (i.e. Yelp, YellowPages, Facebook), and they include your name, address and phone number (NAP). What should I know about citations? It is essential that all of your citations are accurately and consistently displayed. The most important elements are your name, address and phone number, which is usually referred to as NAP. This seems very basic; however, it can get complicated quickly. If you’ve ever used a different business phone number, changed locations […]

Chlorine and the Health of Your Hair

by hrcdayton @ HRC Dayton

At this time of year, we are often asked if chlorine can cause hair loss. The answer is absolutely, no. In a study reported in the Journal of Dermatology, researchers compared the hair of 67 professional swimmers and 54 individuals who had spent little to no time in the pool. Although swimmers’ hair exhibited some signs of having chlorine-induced damage like dryness and coarseness, swimmers were not significantly more likely to experience hair loss. But, high exposure to chlorine can cause the scalp to become dry and flaky. The very chlorine that we are so dependent upon to keep our […]

PRP for Hair Replacement

by hrcdayton @ HRC Dayton

PRP for Hair Replacement PRP, or Platelet Rich Plasma, is a new hair replacement procedure that has been taking the world by storm.  The reason why this process stands above all other hair restoration solutions is due to a combination of things: 1) it’s natural, 2) it doesn’t require any post-treatment medication, and 3) it is quick and relatively simple.  PRP is, as you might have guessed, based off of the blood’s platelets—yours, in particular. Blood is drawn, platelets are extracted and separated via centrifuge, and injected into your scalp where the hair thinning and/or balding is taking place. Why […]

Men’s Baldness in History

by hrcdayton @ HRC Dayton

For those of you who think that HRC Dayton has embarked on a totally new phenomenon – you are wrong.  Four thousand years ago, ancient Egyptians were searching for a hair loss cure. In 1500 B.C., Egyptians recited a magic spell to the sun god before swallowing a cocktail of onions, iron, red lead, honey and alabaster. Needless to say, it didn’t work.  Then, in 1100 B.C., balding men rubbed the fat from lions, hippopotamuses, crocodiles, ibex, tomcat, serpents, porcupine hair and geese onto their scalps. That didn’t work either. Next, they tried the leg of a female greyhound sauteed […]
