How to Have Better UX Before UI Begins

by Alan Smith @ Usability Geek

When you hear “user experience” (UX), you might immediately think of website design. While you are not wrong to associate the two concepts, this illustrates a major pitfall to which some websites designers are prone – confusing UX with UI (user interface). UX is about more than just what the user experiences while on your […]

Sarah Horton & David Sloan – Do No Harm: People First Design for Humane Products

by ayac2002 @ IA Summit

Our lives are increasingly shaped by the technology we use, but people are not a first priority in product design. Other concerns take precedence, and we end up with designs that will yield the highest conversion rate, or interactions that will provide the best usage data.
With People First, we look at what might be considered “edge cases” in standard product design. Instead of moving more singular needs and contexts to the margins of our thinking, planning, and decision-making, we focus on them to learn what is most important for everyone. In this way, we move people front-and-center in our design process, gathering insights and understanding that will help us produce products that are powerful and humane.

Mapping the Domain: Academics’ and Practitioners’ Roundtable

by ayac2002 @ IA Summit

Over the past several years it’s become increasingly clear that the IA community needs to move beyond being a practice and figure out how to become a discipline.

To explore what this entails, and begin to craft a way forward, we’ve convened a series of Academics’ and Practitioners’ roundtables at IA Summits past. In the 5th year of this community event we will draw together highlights, discoveries, and open questions. Participants will present, discuss, learn, and work collaboratively to generate a capstone that reflects the corpus of work done to date. As a core exercise we will map the different and complementary roles and artifacts that practice and academia bring to the “discipline-ification” of information architecture.

The Deep Web And What It Is

by Beverly Lemons @ Page1

Most of the internet is hidden. Not only from users, but from Google and other search engines. There is a vast dark world of internet traffic hidden from all but the few who have the correct passwords and links to access it. The pages and sites that both users and search engines can access on the internet are called the surface web. This is the area where most of us find ourselves, and the surface web is the arena where businesses engage in web design and marketing. As it is available to search engines, it defines the parameters of content which search engines can crawl through when determining SEO rankings. Then, there are a host of network hosts which are inaccessible. These are referred to as the dark internet, the lost net, a dark address or dark address space and sparse darknets. Content on the dark internet is usually harmless, or not of any real value to anyone. It generally consists of data that is importance to a very small audience, and not nefarious or very active. These are different from what is called the Deep Web, or darknet distributed file sharing.  The Deep Web references difficult to find and access secretive websites. The Deep Web is not something you will find or use when engaging in Fort Collins web design, marketing, and website development for a legitimate business or service. It is also not a place accessible to Google analytics or other search engines. The Deep Web incorporates the majority of web traffic. It estimated to be 500 times larger than the surface web most of us use. Popular Science States: According to a study published in Nature, Google indexes no more than 16 percent of the surface Web and misses all of the Deep Web. Any given search turns up just 0.03 percent of the information that exists online (one in 3,000 pages). It’s like fishing in the top two feet of the ocean—you miss the virtual Mariana Trench below. Venture into the Deep Web, and you will find yourself in a realm of password protected pages, content trapped behind paywalls, or have to have specific software to access pages. Deep Web content is not indexed (read by search engines.) Some of the Deep Web is legitimate classified information. And, much of the Deep Web’s content is comprised of mundane material such as the rolls of the U.S.patent office or LexisNexis. Then it gets very, very ugly. A smaller proportion of Deep Web sites and information is hidden because its content and intent is illegal. It provides an underground forum for everything from sex traffickers to drug dealers to terrorists. So, no, you won’t be using SEO in Fort Collins or marketing, or website development to promote a page in the Deep Net. Just the opposite, it does not want to be located, found, or brought into the surface web for any reason. Typical Deep Web Content We warned you, this is ugly. Here is a partial list […]

Make A Web Page That Works For Your Brand: Let Your Clients Do The Talking

by Beverly Lemons @ Page1

When it comes to Fort Collins web design, it is important to engage in a sort of duality. On one hand, you need a web design that boosts your Fort Collins SEO, more importantly though you need to have a website that will speak to your audience and drive the results you are looking for. Generally, to initially attract customers, your web page needs to be prominent in search engine queries, as well as making regular appearances in other media. If customers can’t find your website, they will not be pursuing your business. Fort Collins marketing is about boosting your presence and visibility to potential consumers. Web marketing involves the technical side of developing and promoting content, from boosting your SEO, using Google Analytics and Webmaster Tools, to increasing your visibility and range by using numerous venues to promote your service or product. This is generally accomplished by staying active on social media and providing fresh content with blogs or other regularly updated content. However, Fort Collins marketing is not just about web design that boosts your SEO. It is also about appealing to customers. Once you have a client’s attention, it is vital to attract them into your website, and ultimately, to procuring your services or products. Appealing to Prospective Customers First, know your audience. If you want to attract a specific demographic, or a particular type of client, it is vital to invest the time and energy to uncover what they are looking for and what attracts them, when designing your page. For example, if you are an accounting firm, your web design needs to attract customers with financial needs, bookkeeping questions, and investing and income tax concerns. If you specialize in a certain area of a broad field, this needs to be stressed. If on the other hand, you’re an all purpose accounting firm, your page needs to reflect this. Make your services clear, and present what you can do for clients towards in  both content and visual form for your target audience. Avoid coming off as too dry or academic. At the same time, avoid trying to be cute or silly. Start with your home page. It should present as a basic who, what, when  and where defining your brand. You want it to be clear and sharp, providing clients with a quality overview of your brand, your services, and your expertise. Lay out what you can do, and provide, in concise professional paragraphs or infographics, an overview of your business. You can avoid overloading your home page by using numerous tabs to highlight different areas of your business. For web design, aim for a mobile user friendly layout. Your tabs need to be specific, and reflect the content which a customer is interested in. Focus on Page Visitors Not only do you want customers to easily know who you are and what you do, you want them to trust you. When it comes to marketing, customers have a psychological need to feel connected to a […]
