Could A Chimp Still Do SEO? A Followup

by Julie Joyce @ SEO Chicks

In 2007 I was much more obnoxious (and had more free time) and I wrote a post about whether chimps could take over our jobs. I’m still sure that they could definitely perform certain functions in this industry, besides being DAMNED cute even if they are fairly deadly, but what about some of the new roles that have come about or gotten more important in the past 5 1/2 years? Could a chimp do those too? Damn right she could.                     Content Marketing Create sites that are great and useful, totally relevant, and constantly updated with new and brilliant content that people love, socialize, and editorially link to? Um, no, but [...]

What Is ‘Mobile’?

by Bridget Randolph @ SEO Chicks

Mobile traffic, mobile websites, mobile apps. These and similar phrases are increasingly being discussed in SEO circles, but sometimes (and I am as guilty of this as anyone) we forget to define what we actually mean by the term ‘mobile’. The Official Definition The Mobile Marketing Association recently defined ‘mobile marketing’ as “a set of practices that enables organizations to communicate and engage with their audience in an interactive and relevant manner through and with any mobile device or network.” [emphasis mine] But to the average person (at least here in the UK), ‘mobile’ is a synonym for ‘cell phone’. No one says, ‘let me look it up on my mobile’ and then takes out an iPad. Tablets, smartphones and [...]

The Top 5 Landscape Design Trends of Fall 2017

by Build Des Moines @ BUILD Des Moines

The National Association of Landscape Professionals predicts increasing demand for high-tech fire features, dramatic interiorscapes and more. While many people mistakenly associate only the spring and summer with outdoor activities, fall is prime season for many landscape projects. With autumn just around the corner, the National Association of Landscape Professionals (NALP) announces its official list of the top landscape trends anticipated to receive increased interest and adoption by homeowners this coming season. The association foresees an uptick in landscape enjoyment and projects this fall, thanks in part to forecasts that predict a warmer-than-usual season in most parts of the country. “The outdoor entertaining trend has been gaining momentum over the past several years, and this year has seen a further desire to bring the indoors out,” says Missy Henriksen, vice president of public affairs, NALP. “In particular, the warmer fall months will lend themselves to increased attention on outdoor spaces, as homeowners look to extend the summer outdoor entertaining season and adapt their landscapes for enjoyment throughout the year. By working with a landscape professional, homeowners can learn how to implement the latest trends into their landscapes and discover the options that work best for their location and lifestyles.” NALP [...]

SES London 2011 – Meaningful SEO Metrics

Meaningful SEO Metrics – Going Beyond the Numbers Moderator – Brian Clifton Speaker – Matthew Bailey Speaker – Peter Young Brian Clifton introduces the concept of web analytics by saying that for many it can be off-putting, however Brian defines it as “measuring the user experience” in order to improve it. Two types of tools – on and off-site analytics. On – what happens when a visitor comes, what do they do, how do they engage? To a large extent it is site-determined, and within our control. Off-site – less within our control, e.g. search rankings or 3rd party mention. The challenge for the web analytics industry is “how do we bring these together?” Brian hands over to our speakers, [...]

There’s the brains, the sass, the dexterity, the resourcefulness, the do and the green. It wasn’t clear from the clip if she would be able to increase the visibility of a site online however I get the sense she’d be able to do it by sheer force of will. Digital Design

by Build Des Moines @ BUILD Des Moines

Virtual Reality is the future for architecture and design. This year more than 111 million people watched Super Bowl LI in February. For one of the better received commercials, Hyundai invited US Army soldiers stationed in Zagan, Poland, to watch the game live as the game was played. But more notably some soldiers were able to watch the game with their families who were attending the game in Houston, Texas—in real time through Virtual Reality (VR) as if they were at the game together. VR has the potential to take people where they cannot go in real life, to visit people in distant places, or to visit places of the past or even the future. This year for the first time, there was even a VR short film nominated for an Academy Award. VR is preparing physicians for complex surgeries to save more lives. It allows a person to literally walk in someone else’s shoes and better empathize and appreciate the other’s situation and perspective. VR has opened up a new set of possibilities (opportunities) for architecture and design. Designers, engineers, contractors and clients can all do virtual walkthroughs of their projects to help solve design and construction challenges before [...]

How Should You Vet A Referral?

by Julie Joyce @ SEO Chicks

I was recently approached by someone who immediately had that demanding vibe that so heavily annoys me and makes me get more frown lines, and that encounter has caused me to rethink how I vet a client, both for my own business and to send out as a referral. You see, I feel like I am wasting someone’s time if I know I have no room to take them on, so I immediately tell them that and try to help them find someone who can help them. Usually it goes well and people are thankful that they don’t have to go trawling for someone with half a brain but sometimes it blows up in my face. There was the guy [...]

The Significance of the Skilled Trades

by Build Des Moines @ BUILD Des Moines

Mike Rowe, the king of dirty jobs, shines the spotlight on Iowa’s Skilled Trades efforts. Typically only 10-year-old boys would enjoy a discussion that involved excrement, roaches, and vomit. Especially if the tale were told over the dinner table. But when the storyteller is someone as entertaining as Mike Rowe, and the audience is a hall full of men and women who are used to getting their hands dirty, somehow it works. That was the case Thursday evening, September 28, when Mike Rowe, the host of Dirty Jobs, was the keynote speaker at the first Skilled Trades Alliance dinner. The evening’s activities began with networking from 4 to 6 p.m. More than a dozen exhibitors had the opportunity to highlight their businesses and schools with students and educators interested in the skilled trades. As the dinner began, Governor Kim Reynolds spoke about the passion she has for creating a competitive business environment in Iowa for small businesses like those represented in the audience. One way the state is accomplishing that is through programs like those the Skilled Trades Alliance advocates—apprenticeships that bring talented young people into the industry. “We have more than 8,000 active apprenticeships in Iowa right now, and [...]

K&V Homes Celebrates 20 Years

by Build Des Moines @ BUILD Des Moines

Lifelong friendship turns into successful business. “Life is what happens to you when you’re making other plans,” according to John Lennon. That could also be the short version of the K&V Homes story. This year Colin King and Dean Vogel, the owners, celebrate 20 years in business, something they probably would not have predicted when they were doing residential contracting together after college. “We worked for the same employer for a few years before going out on our own,” says King. “We both had other ideas about what we were going to do career-wise, but we decided we liked what we were doing and we might as well be doing it for ourselves.” King says they started with predominantly semi-custom homes and spec homes, doing all their own framing as well as framing for other builders. “The plan wasn’t really to jump right into custom homes,” says Vogel. “As it turned out, though, our second project was a custom home, which is kind of weird thinking back on it now. We weren’t really planning to focus on custom right away, but that second project was a good introduction to custom building.” “We never anticipated where we’d be in 20 years. [...]

First thing to remember is that FB is difficult to work with unless you’re already connected to something – it is not a search engine. Most important thing is to know if your audience is there. Is the audience lurking but not engaging? If so then perhaps FB ads are more appropriate. Stickiness – games are great for this, and can be addicting. Twitter – 200MM accounts only 20% are active, whereas FB has 500MM active accounts. Contests can engage people e.g. SES Conf fan page, marketing tip of the week, with [...]

Spreading the Message

Iowa Skilled Trades event highlights educational options. A little more than a year ago, the Skilled Trades Alliance was founded in an effort to partner business and education entities and their unified goal of training the next generation of skilled tradespeople. Later this month the alliance is holding a dinner and fund-raising event to promote that effort. And the biggest name in skilled—or not-so-skilled—labor is going to help. Mike Rowe of Dirty Jobs fame will be the closing speaker at the September 28 event. “He gets asked to speak at all kinds of events,” says organizer Brandon Patterson of ReMax Real Estate Concepts. “But he’s chosen to focus on events that really fit his message. So we were thrilled when he recognized this event is a perfect fit.” According to Patterson, discussions about a Skilled Trades Academy awareness program began last winter, after Des Moines-area members of the Home Builders Association (HBA) realized that too many individuals in the local construction industry weren’t even aware the Skilled Trades Alliance existed. “The HBA and many of its members have donated a lot of money and equipment to the Skilled Trades program at Central Campus, and too many of our members had [...]

Pantone’s Hottest Home Trends

by Build Des Moines @ BUILD Des Moines

Pantone predicts the hottest home trends that will be coming for 2018. Wondering what stylish homes will look like next year? According to Pantone, the color authority turned trend forecaster, homeowners in the know will be flashing some fringe and going geometric and iridescent in 2018. At the International Home and Housewares Show in Chicago, Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, introduced the home decor fads that will be all the rage next year. And we’re inclined to listen up, because the folks at Pantone—which used to predict only the Color of the Year, then branched out into seasonal color forecasts and now more general home design trends—seem to know what they’re talking about. Case in point? They hit it on the nose with at least one of their two predictions for 2016’s Colors of the Year, Rose Quartz, a ubiquitous light pink shade whose iterations nicknamed “Tumblr pink” or “millennial pink” have invaded fashion, interiors, and graphic design. Recently New York Magazine reported on “Why Millennial Pink Refuses to Go Away.” So what’s the next big thing, Pantone? Here are the six home trends that it predicts will rise to the top, and the shades that [...]

by Build Des Moines @ BUILD Des Moines

Builders can track and generate bids, estimates, proposals, payments, orders, and budgets from their smartphones while travelling or on site. They can message between team members, store photos and to-dos and manage schedules. Clients also can log in online to discuss order changes and see pictures as a project progresses. Available on the App Store and Google Play, with plans starting at $99/month. BuilderTrend.com magicplan By taking a 360-degree video of a room and marking corners and doorways, magicplan can create a basic floor plan on site in a few minutes. Users can then adjust the plan as needed by moving walls and placing furniture. They also can connect multiple rooms to create a [...]
